Instagram analytics glossary: 20 metrics defined

Most confusion about social metrics is not about strategy, it is about definitions. These are the terms that appear in reports, what each one counts, and which are available for accounts you do not control.

In short

What does this metric in my report actually count?

Reach counts unique accounts that saw a post; views counts every time it was shown, repeats included, so views is always the higher number. Impressions was that second metric until Meta retired it in April 2025. Saves and shares are signals Instagram has said it weighs in ranking, and they exist only for accounts you manage. Engagement rate has four common definitions that produce different numbers from the same post. Follower count is the least informative number on a profile and the most quoted.

Most arguments about social media performance are really arguments about definitions. These are the terms that turn up in reports, what each actually counts, and where each is available.

Distribution

Reach

The number of unique accounts that saw a post at least once. One person seeing it five times counts once.

Available for: accounts you manage only. Confused with: views. Reach is always the smaller number.

Impressions

The total number of times a post was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. If reach was 1,000 and impressions 2,500, the average viewer saw it 2.5 times. Meta deprecated the metric on 21 April 2025 (Instagram Platform changelog) and replaced it with views, which counts differently. It survives only in exports and reports from before that date.

Available for: nothing current. A tool still showing it is showing an old number.

Views

Instagram has repeatedly redefined this. As of September 2026, and since April 2025, it is the one metric for every format: the number of times a post or reel was shown, repeats included. Before that, Reels had plays (times a Reel started), video posts had views of at least three seconds, and impressions did the job for everything else; the impressions guide sets the dates out from Meta’s changelog. Because the definition has changed, do not compare view counts across a period where the platform redefined it without saying so.

Available for: accounts you manage only.

Followers

The number of accounts subscribed to yours. The most quoted number on any profile and the least informative: it says nothing about whether those accounts see or respond to anything. See how to tell whether your followers are real.

Interactions

Likes

The cheapest action available, and the easiest to automate. Useful in aggregate, weak as a signal on its own.

Comments

Higher intent than a like because it costs effort. Worth reading rather than counting: a burst of generic comments usually means an engagement pod rather than interest.

Saves

Someone deciding your post is worth returning to. A signal Instagram has said it weighs in ranking, with likes, comments and shares (Instagram’s ranking explainer, May 2023).

Available for: accounts you manage only.

Shares

Someone sending your post to another person or their story. High intent, because it spends their reputation rather than yours.

Available for: accounts you manage only.

Profile visits and follows from a post

How many people went from the post to your profile, and how many followed as a result. The clearest available measure of whether a post recruited anyone.

Available for: accounts you manage only.

Rates

Engagement rate is the interactions a post received, likes, comments, saves and shares, divided by an audience count and multiplied by 100. Which audience count, reach, views or followers, is the whole difference between the four definitions below, and a rate quoted without it cannot be compared.

Engagement rate by reach

Interactions divided by reach. Asks: did the people who saw this respond? The most honest measure of a single post, and only calculable for accounts you manage.

Engagement rate by followers

Interactions divided by follower count. The figure quoted in nearly every free calculator and influencer marketplace, because followers is the only audience number visible from outside. Falls as an account grows, for arithmetic rather than quality reasons.

Engagement rate by views

Interactions divided by views. Until April 2025 this was engagement rate by impressions, and the swap changed what the denominator counts, so a rate on it changed definition then even where the label did not. Always lower than the reach version, and rarely the most useful of the three.

Engagement rate by post vs by account

Per-post rates are averaged - or better, medianed - to describe an account. Which aggregation was used changes the answer materially, because a single viral post distorts a mean for months.

These four are all called “engagement rate”. They are not interchangeable, and the difference is the subject of its own guide.

Timing and consistency

Cadence

How often you publish, and how regularly. A predictable rhythm trains both the audience and the ranking system.

Best time to post

The window when your audience is most active. Published averages disagree by hours because each measured a different population - why that happens.

Audience

Audience quality

An assessment of how much of a following is real and engaged. Always derived from a sample of accounts that interact, because no Instagram API returns a list of followers.

Demographics

Age, gender and city distributions, as percentages. Available for accounts you manage, and only once the account has 100 followers, Meta’s stated threshold (account insights reference), so the aggregate cannot identify anyone.

Follower to following ratio

An account following far more than it is followed by is usually automated. A few of these in an audience is normal; a large share is a signal.

Two terms worth being sceptical of

“Estimated reach”

Reach cannot be obtained for an account you do not control. Any figure labelled this way is a model, and its accuracy depends on assumptions you cannot inspect. What is actually obtainable.

“Engagement score”

A vendor-specific composite with no shared definition. Two products’ scores are never comparable, and neither is comparable with anything else.

Also asked

What is the difference between reach and views on Instagram?

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post at least once; one person seeing it five times counts once. Views is the number of times the post was shown, repeats included, so views is always the higher number. Both are reported only for accounts you manage.

What is estimated reach on Instagram?

Estimated reach is a modelled figure, not a measurement. Reach is reported by Meta only for accounts you manage, so any reach shown for an account you do not control is a model, and its accuracy depends on assumptions you cannot inspect. Read it as a guess with a label.

What counts as an interaction on Instagram?

Likes, comments, saves and shares, the actions that feed engagement rate, plus profile visits and follows from a post. Likes are the cheapest action and the easiest to automate; comments cost more effort; saves signal a post worth returning to; shares spend the sender's own reputation. Instagram has said it weighs likes, comments, saves and shares in ranking.
