Northfact vs Buffer: which one you actually need

We are a three-channel beta being compared to a tool that has been shipping since 2010. Here is where Buffer is the better answer, where we are, and how to tell which one you are.

In short

Pick Buffer if you publish to more than three networks, want a native app in your phone's app store, or want a tool to draft captions for you - it does all three today and Northfact does none of them. Pick Northfact if the numbers are the job: every figure carries the source it came from and what it was measured against, unavailable metrics are shown as gaps rather than filled with estimates, and competitor benchmarking and hashtag performance sit beside the posts you published. Many people should use both.

A level balance scale, a stack of envelopes on one pan and a ruler on the other: publishing reach against measurement

Comparison pages are usually written so the author wins every row. This one is not going to be, because the honest answer for a lot of people reading it is Buffer, and a table where our column is green all the way down would tell you nothing you could act on.

Plainly, what each is for. Buffer is a publishing tool first: it exists to get posts out to many networks on a schedule, with analytics alongside. Northfact is an analytics tool that also publishes to three networks: it exists to say where every number came from and what it was divided by. The two families are described in scheduler vs analytics tool, and the job Northfact’s reports are built for is set out in what a client social media report should contain.

Where Buffer is the better tool

More networks. Buffer’s home page names eleven platforms it publishes to (buffer.com, checked September 2026); Northfact publishes to three: Instagram, Facebook and Threads. If your week includes LinkedIn, X, TikTok, Pinterest or YouTube, Northfact cannot be your publishing tool today and no amount of measurement makes up for that. TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn are in development here, which is a promise rather than a feature.

Native mobile apps. Buffer has iOS and Android apps in the stores (Buffer’s mobile page, checked September 2026). Northfact installs to a phone home screen straight from the browser and opens in its own window with no address bar, and the workspace is laid out to work at phone width - so scheduling a post and reading your numbers on a phone are things you can do. What it will not do is take a share from the Instagram sheet: no installed web app can do that on an iPhone, and on Android we have not built it. It does not send you notifications either, and that one is ours to close rather than the platform’s. If that is how your day works the gap is a real one. Native apps are in development here, which is a promise rather than a feature.

Writing help. Buffer has an AI assistant that will draft and rework captions for you (Buffer’s AI Assistant page, checked September 2026). Northfact has nothing equivalent. Our Grow page will tell you that short captions earn more on your account and hand the length to the composer, but you still write the caption.

A decade of edge cases. Buffer has been doing this since November 2010 (Buffer’s about page, checked September 2026). Queues, approval flows, browser extensions, team seats, the long tail of things you only discover you needed in week three - most of that is answered there and some of it is not answered here yet.

Where Northfact is the better tool

Every number says where it came from. This is the whole reason the product exists. An engagement rate measured against reach and one measured against followers are different numbers, and most tools print whichever one they have under the same label. Northfact labels each one, and the labels leave with the report, so the person receiving it can check where a figure came from instead of taking it on faith.

A missing metric is shown as missing. When a platform will not report something for a post - watch time on a still image, demographics from a source that cannot see them - the page says so and names the source it asked. It does not substitute an estimate that looks like a measurement. This sounds like a small thing until you have presented a number to a client and been asked where it came from.

Competitor benchmarking against your own category. Not a generic industry average: accounts you choose, compared on posting rhythm, format mix and engagement.

Hashtag performance measured on your posts. Which tags carried reach on your account, rather than a popularity list that is the same for everybody.

Publishing and measurement in one place. The report is attached to the posts you published from the same workspace, so “what should I do next” and “what happened last month” are the same screen rather than two products and a spreadsheet between them.

Buffer’s column was checked against Buffer’s public pages in September 2026. Buffer changes faster than this page; a row that has since changed is ours to fix, not Buffer’s to explain.

So which one

Buffer, if publishing is the bottleneck. More than three networks, a native app you can share into from Instagram, a team that needs approvals, or you want something to help write the caption.

Northfact, if the numbers are the job. You have to explain performance to a client, a brand or yourself, you work mainly on Instagram, Facebook and Threads, and you have been bitten before by a figure you could not source.

Both, which is what several people in the beta do: publish where they have always published, and bring the measurement here.

If that sounds like you, the beta is open and free.

Also asked

Is Northfact a Buffer alternative?

Only for part of the job. Buffer's site names eleven publishing platforms and Buffer has native iOS and Android apps; Northfact publishes to three, Instagram, Facebook and Threads, and has no native app yet. Northfact's case is measurement: every figure carries its source and denominator, and unavailable metrics show as gaps. Several beta users run both.

Does Northfact have a mobile app?

Not a native one. Northfact installs to a phone home screen from the browser, opens in its own window and is laid out for phone width, so scheduling and reading numbers on a phone work. It cannot receive a share from the Instagram share sheet and does not send notifications. A native app is being built.

Which networks does Northfact publish to?

Three: Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Buffer's site names eleven platforms it publishes to, and if your week includes LinkedIn, X, TikTok, Pinterest or YouTube, Northfact cannot be your publishing tool today. TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn are listed as in development, which the page calls a promise rather than a feature.
